As I feel we have a nice little community on the go here on londoncyclist.co.uk I thought it would be a good idea for us to join the London Cycle Challenge. Therefore I’ve created Team London Cyclist for anyone to join:
https://cyclechallenge.tfl.gov.uk/team.php?team=346
Whenever you cycle in the month of June you log the miles onto the TfL cycle challenge website. This goes into a great big pool of miles for Team London Cyclist and we compete against others to have the most miles. There are various prizes up for grabs and according to Road.cc as a participant you also qualify for a free-two hour cycling training session. To claim this you need to call 020 7231 6005 or email bookings@cycletraining.co.uk and mention ‘London Cycle Challenge’.
I’ll be in charge of keeping the team motivated (you can call me Mr. Motivator) and if our team does well we can be as happy as the generic cyclists in this poster:

Is it just miles we cover in town? As in the first week of June I’m pedalling to Paris, which would probably boost my average commute quite considerably…
Andreas says
I’ve asked TfL for clarification on this Fabian so should be hearing back soon!
Andreas says
Okay it seems that as long as you live in London any miles you cover anywhere are counted!
Edc says
Great news it counts, will sign up later tonight. should give the team a good boost 🙂
Fabian are you doing the Skyline ride leaving 2nd June??
Fabian says
Yep! I am indeed – looking forward to it with mixed measures of terror and excitement!
aidan says
What’s to stop people just making numbers up?
Andreas says
This is what I was thinking. I guess it relies on cyclists being decent and honest people!
Fabian says
Which we are of course!
Edc says
I’m cycling to Paris next week – can I enter those miles? 🙂
Andreas says
You have to be in London to join but miles cycled outside of London also count. So yes!
Tim says
Great idea so glad I got a new bike for my birthday!
Andreas says
Wow, the team is doing very well and getting very big! Great stuff 🙂
Hilary says
I only commute a few miles each day but I joined the team! user name bathory (tagged my twitter name as the “department”)
Patrick says
What a great way to motivate me to do more miles on my training rides!
Tim says
What bike did you get for your birthday Tim?
Tim says
I do a daily commute into town from Leytonstone, have always ridden hybrids. Like Marins so I bought a Sausalito this time. Very pleased with it so far. Tough machine but quite speedy.
Tim says
Just in case anyone is confused there are two Tims I think. How do I put a photo in the Avatar thingy that should sort out future probs?
Andreas says
Head to gravatar.com
edc says
I’ve signed up to Gravatar but not sure how to link it to my post!
Any help much appreciated
edc says
Well I guess thats answered my own question 🙂
Andreas says
Good isn’t it!
Patrick says
Maybe we could do a group ride later in the month, like around Regent’s Park or somewhere similar?
Tina says
I’d be up for that Patrick, would be nice to actually meet a few fellow cyclists instead of always ever only passing them by…
Edc says
I’d be keen to do that as well… although I will wait til I return from Paris just in case i develop a sudden hatred for cycling 🙂
Fabian says
Likewise…as I rather suspect every part of me is going to be less than keen to re-embrace the two wheeled machine for a little while after!
Andreas says
I like your idea! Be good to boost our number of miles!
Patrick says
How does the weekend of the 19th/20th sound for a group ride? I can’t think of anywhere more suitable than the circuit of Regent’s Park; central location, relatively flat course…

Patrick says
Apologies for the double post, i wasn’t sure if this had gone up originally as my computer said ‘404 error’ when I typed it originally!
Karl says
The meet up ride is a great idea, I cant make that weekend because doing the London to Brighton (should boost miles for team), but maybe we could organise other rides, would be great to meet up have a cycle an get to know each other a little better over a coffee? I would definitely be up for a regular London Cyclist ‘ride and meet’.
Fabian says
Just popped my mileage for my jaunt to Paris – that should rack up our tally a little bit. Was a great ride and would heartily recommend having a go…struggled along with my 3 speed Pashley so am sure better geared bikes could whizz everyone else along!
Andreas says
Thanks Fabian. A stellar contribution! I want to do a quick trip to Paris soon aswell..
Fabian Beardsly says
I’ll lend you my route map – was a beyond superb route and one designed to be shared!
Andreas says
Like it – send it over!
Ant B says
A lot of my work colleagues live outside London but commute in by train to the City of London to work. Obviously, they live too far away to commute by bike but they could do a part bike, part train commute, as well as recreational biking. Do their miles outside London count if they join, or is it only if you ‘live’ in London?
Regards
Ant.
Andreas says
According to TfL the only requirement is that you must ‘live’ in London. But you can easily cycle 20 miles outside of London and as long as your residence is in London it would count.
Tim says
I’m gutted that the first 3 days of June my bike was being serviced, and now I am going on holiday on Friday for a week! I feel guilty that I am not pulling my weight!
Andreas says
Don’t worry Tim! Plenty of time still to pull plenty of miles in!
Karl says
We seem to be appearing in 2 categories now, 51-100 in third place and 100+ in first place? Does that mean we have won in a category?
