I recently received an email from Adam to tell me about the Hackney Bicycle Film Society and was pretty excited about sharing it with everyone because I know people will be interested and most of you will not have heard of it before now.
The society has been hugely successful and the initial target of just 60 members has already been surpassed with 180 people attending the first showing. The film society meets once a month where a bike related film is shown. The meeting happens down Gray’s Inn Road.
The last showing also had a guest speaker who discussed how he cycled from India to England. As this was a huge crowd pleaser further speakers are being arranged.
Membership is free and is required to be able to attend the events. All you have to do to join is send your name, address and occupation to hackneybicyclefilmsociety@gmail.com. I’m already signed up as member 200.
The details of the events are listed on the diary page. The next couple of movies are the Flying Scotsman and Live Bicycle.
Additionally to this the society is associated with the Hackney Bike Workshop. This is a twice a month workshop to help you sort out any problems with your bike. Again this is free to attend. It is a great opportunity to meet fellow cyclists and learn about looking after your bike. (Everything from simple punctures to more complex repairs is covered).
I’m very glad Adam brought these to my attention and it is good to see cycling workshops and societies showing the strength of London’s cycling community. Make sure you check both of them out and if you know of any similar societies etc then let me know.

I like the workshop idea. Pity there isn’t something similar in Lambeth. The film society sounds interesting too.
