A new one night only bike event is coming to London called Velonotte. It has already been a huge success in Moscow, St. Petersburg, New York and Rome with some of the events drawing up to 5,000 riders.
The event will provide an opening to the London Festival of Architectureand will be held on the 23rd of June.
The ride will set off at 11.30pm from St. Pauls Cathedral and head off towards Spitalfeilds, Poplar and Newham taking in interesting sights along the way. It will be guided by cultural historians including Peter Ackroyd, Richard Rogers, Ricky Burdett, Peter Murray and David Adjaye.
At the end of the ride theyโll be a 20 piece orchestra greeting the dawn as riders arrive at Canary Wharf.
The guides will narrate the tour via the radio, Resonance FM 104,4 FM. To attend you need to register on the site below and bring a bike along with a radio headset to tune in along the way to short talks at particular locations, soundscapes and music.

Love the sound of the event, not so much their dictating that a helmet is a “must”!
James R Grinter says
Probably because of all those riders listening to their radios and not paying attention to the road..?
But, yes, that puts me right off participating even if I could find an FM radio.

What a fantastic idea: Culture, education, and a mass ride, sounds too good to miss.
And it’ll make such a refreshing change to do a run at night.
Hope to see you all there.
Francois says
This sounds absolutely great. I’m not willing to wear a helmet for it though. What a pity.
Mick says
They can’t force you to wear a helmet. Can they?
Chris says
What’s the problem with wearing a helmet?
If you think it’s going to be a good event then get your helmet on and enjoy it. Simple innit ๐
Nina says
Hmm … WHERE does it say that a’helmet is a must’? As opposed to a ‘radio headset’ which is just ear plugs?
Chris says
Nina – in the FAQ on the velonotte website… they ‘consider it a must’
Again, why is wearing a helmet such a problem? I guess you shouldn’t wear a crash helmet on a motorbike or seatbelts in cars either. Bloody do-gooder safety conscious freaks interfering with our free will to do ourselves harm as we see fit! ๐
Ashleigh says
It does say a helmet is a must and they can force you to wear a helmet if you want to participate in the event. Personally, while I don’t think wearing a helmet should be the law, I think events are obliged to make helmet wearing a must…

Great idea, shame about the British summer!
