Veho helmet camera review

The Veho Muvi VCC-003 is a tiny helmet camera which retails for just £32.90 on Amazon. It’s a perfect entry level action camera for capturing your cycling.

Features

The Veho Muvi 003 Micro DV Camcorder, or Veho Muvi as I’ll refer to it from now on, measures just 55mm in size. It uses a 2 megapixel camera and records in 640 x 480 resolution. This is far from HD quality but if perfectly adequate as a safety camera and the detail is enough to read number plates.

The fun starts when you couple the Veho Muvi with the extreme sports pack. You can then attach the camera to your helmet or your bike handlebars. There’s also a lanyard so you could hang the camera from your neck, and a armband strap for mounting it to your arm. Alternatively, you can simply use the clip mount to attach it to a shirt or your bag straps if they are thin enough.

As if those mounting options were not enough, the Veho Muvi extreme sports pack also comes with a magnet mount, so you can attach this to your fridge or other magnetic surfaces.

The good

The tiny size and ease of operation are the two huge draws for the Veho Muvi helmet camera. You could definitely picture James Bond using this tiny camera to steal government secrets. For more day to day uses, such as on your bicycle handlebars, the Muvi is barely noticeable. Nobody will give it a second glance. However, on your helmet, it is more visible, but still far smaller than the GoPro.

Mounting it to your bicycle handlebars is very easy using the two velcro straps. Helmet mounting is a little more fiddly, but it gets a lot easier once you’ve attached it a couple of times.

The bad

Having such a small sized camera body is obviously going to bring up some downsides. For a start, the small battery means recording times are limited. The manufacturer claims around three hours of continuous operation. In reality you’ll probably achieve around two to two and a half hours. The supplied Micro SD card is 2 GB in size. This should provide around 90 minutes of recording. You can also upgrade up to a maximum of an 8 GB card.

The video quality is adequate but not fantastic. If you really want to show off amazing footage of you mountain biking down a hill at crazy speeds, then this isn’t the camera for you. However, if you want a safety camera that could be useful as evidence if you ever got in trouble, then the Veho Muvi is perfect.

You also don’t get any waterproofing with the Veho Muvi, so once the rain comes down, you’ll have to put the camera away.

The ugly

The biggest downside with the Veho Muvi, is that when it is attached to your handlebars, the vibrations make the video look rather weird. You get a wavy effect caused by the vibrations.

Review

If you are looking for a simple, tiny, easy to use helmet camera and you are not too fussed about the video quality, then the Veho Muvi is a bargain. It should happily record most bike commutes as well as any secret spy missions you need to go on. The biggest downside? You can’t attach this to your handlebars, as it suffers from too many vibrations. Fortunately, you have plenty of alternative mounting options.
